MONTSERRAT GOVERNMENT UK OFFICE

MGUKO 2025 Year in Review

As 2025 comes to a close, the Montserrat Government UK Office (MGUKO) reflects on a year focused on delivery, connection, and impact — strengthening Montserrat’s voice internationally while building practical pathways for diaspora engagement and national development.

We would like to thank our partners, community organisations, and members of the Montserratian diaspora for your continued engagement and support throughout the year.

Diplomatic Representation & Advocacy

Throughout 2025, MGUKO continued to represent Montserrat’s interests across UK Government, Parliament, and Overseas Territory networks.

Key areas of activity included supporting youth engagement and representation, including Montserrat’s participation in the UK Youth Parliament and the Overseas Territories Youth Summit, ensuring young Montserratians’ voices were reflected in wider discussions.

MGUKO also represented Montserrat at key national and international moments, including Remembrance Day and Commonwealth Day, reinforcing the island’s visibility within shared institutions and commemorations. Parliamentary engagement was further strengthened through support to the Speaker of the Montserrat Legislative Assembly at the Annual Commons and Overseas Territories Conference.

The Office supported the Hon. Premier Reuben Meade and the Montserrat delegation during Joint Ministerial Council (JMC) Week 2025, alongside ongoing engagement with UK Government departments to advance priorities across economic development, climate resilience, education, health, and infrastructure. Collaboration with Overseas Territory and Commonwealth partners remained a core part of this work.

Trade, Investment & Sustainable Development

Economic diversification and long-term sustainability remain central to MGUKO’s work.

In 2025, the Office supported early-stage investor engagement and facilitated discussions around infrastructure, innovation, and climate-aligned investment, continuing to position Montserrat as a destination for sustainable and responsible growth.

This included building a constructive relationship with Lloyds Bank, with early discussions underway on Montserrat’s retail banking challenges and the potential for improved correspondent banking arrangements to support trade, investment, and financial resilience. MGUKO also used relevant forums to highlight the importance of inclusive banking infrastructure for Montserrat’s economic development.

This work will continue into 2026 as engagement progresses and discussions become more structured.

Diaspora Engagement & Community Support

Supporting Montserratians overseas and strengthening connections to home remains at the heart of MGUKO’s work.

In 2025, the Office focused on building structured, inclusive, and long-term diaspora engagement, creating clearer pathways for participation in Montserrat’s national development. This work is underpinned by connected initiatives that recognise diaspora skills, leadership, and enterprise.

These include the continued development of the Montserrat Diaspora Database, the establishment of a Montserrat Business Directory to recognise UK-based diaspora-led businesses, and support for the Inaugural Montserrat Diaspora Leadership Conference, which brought together leaders, professionals, and community organisers to explore development priorities and future collaboration.

Alongside its UK focus, MGUKO is also working towards stronger engagement with Montserratian communities in the United States and Canada, including diaspora mapping and relationship-building with community leaders.

Cultural Preservation & Commemoration

Preserving Montserrat’s culture, history, and collective memory remains a vital part of MGUKO’s work.

In 2025, the Office supported activities marking the 30th anniversary of the Soufrière Hills volcanic eruption, with a focus on reflection, dialogue, and creative expression.

This included a commemorative reception at the House of Commons, a Thanksgiving Service for remembrance and reflection, and participation in the SHV30 Scientific Conference (14–18 July), where MGUKO contributed a diaspora perspective. The year also saw the launch of Soufrière Stories, a four-episode podcast capturing diaspora reflections, collaboration on the Montserrat Small Beginnings Orchestra hybrid concert, and attendance at Montserrat Heritage Day and Montserrat Festival UK.

Together, these activities highlighted Montserrat’s resilience and the central role of culture and memory in shaping our shared future.

Staying Connected

Throughout the year, MGUKO has continued to strengthen its communications and engagement channels, including the refreshed website, the MGUKO Community Blog, and a new WhatsApp broadcast channel for timely updates.

Looking ahead to 2026, the Office will also introduce a Community Calendar to bring together key diaspora events, cultural activities, and official engagements in one shared space.

Looking Ahead to 2026

Looking ahead to 2026, MGUKO will build on this year’s foundations to deepen impact, strengthen partnerships, and broaden engagement across the global Montserratian community. The focus will be on strengthening diaspora engagement across the UK, United States, and Canada; advancing trade and investment opportunities; continuing strong advocacy on Montserrat’s behalf; and supporting cultural preservation and community-led activity.

Season’s greetings and warm wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year from the Montserrat Government UK Office team.
We thank you for your continued support and partnership and look forward to working together in the year ahead.
