On International Women’s Day, we celebrate the remarkable contributions of Montserratian women making a difference.
To mark the occasion, the Head of the Montserrat Government UK Office posed a series of questions to Marcella Lee, the Managing Director of MJ Promotions Ltd and the creative force behind L.O.W. Apparels, L.O.W. Events, and MJ Promotions Pop-Ups. Her work in branding, marketing, and event promotions has provided countless businesses with the visibility and support needed to grow and thrive.
What is your business, and what inspired you to start it?
My name is Marcella Lee, and I’m the Managing Director of MJ Promotions Ltd and the Creative Visionary behind L.O.W. Apparels, L.O.W. Events & MJ Promotions Pop-Ups.
As a brand, our ethos is to increase visibility through customised marketing materials, branded merchandise, and creative promotional strategies that build customer loyalty. Our Apparels range continues in the same strength with a sound tagline and an effusive customer base who are all proud to wear their Love Over War pieces.
How does your Montserratian heritage influence your work?
My Montserrat heritage has greatly influenced my work. The vibrant culture, strong sense of community, and entrepreneurial spirit have shaped my approach as a businesswoman. I believe in creating opportunities, celebrating diversity, and supporting new and upcoming businesses in meaningful ways. That’s why I’m passionate about helping brands grow, stand out, and connect with their audiences through effective promotions and engaging events.
What challenges have you faced as a woman entrepreneur, and how have you overcome them?
As a businesswoman, I faced several challenges, but overcoming them over the years is what defines my success. In the beginning, it was difficult to gain visibility. As a woman in the promotional industry, it can be harder to gain respect and recognition—especially back when I started promotions, as it was a male-dominated space. I had to build strong relationships and network within my community, allowing my work to speak for itself. I remained confident, professional, and focused.
Funding my own business in the early stages was definitely a challenge. I’ve learned to budget wisely, reinvest profits into my business, and explore creative ways to generate revenue. It is important to highlight that not every event or promotional campaign goes as planned, which can be discouraging. I’ve had to remind myself on many occasions why I started, stay adaptable, and see challenges as learning experiences.
What advice would you give to other Montserratian women looking to start their own business?
Confidence is key. If you have a vision, trust your abilities and take that step. Doubts will definitely come, but don’t let fear hold you back. Challenges are part of your journey. Everything doesn’t need to be perfect to start. Use the resources you have, learn as you go, and build step by step.
Success is even more rewarding when you help others along the way. Support fellow women in business, share opportunities, and create spaces for growth. Always remember to be authentic, embrace what makes you unique, and deliver value.
Happy International Women’s Day! As we embrace this year’s theme of ‘Accelerating Action,’ let’s amplify the voices of Montserratian women, celebrate their achievements, and drive forward opportunities for them to lead, innovate, and shape a brighter future.
